Japan secures UAE oil supplies bypassing Strait of Hormuz

07 May 2026 12:58

The government of Japan has reached an agreement with the United Arab Emirates to secure additional oil supplies totalling 20 million barrels, according to a report by Nikkei Asia.

Under the deal, the shipments will be routed through the Port of Fujairah, located on the Gulf of Oman. This route allows Japan to bypass the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz, where tensions remain high.

The Port of Fujairah is directly linked to the UAE’s oil fields via pipeline infrastructure, positioning it as a critical alternative export corridor at a time when traditional shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz face potential disruptions.

The agreement is intended to ensure stable energy supplies for Japan while mitigating risks associated with geopolitical instability affecting key maritime chokepoints.
