Japan to lift final restrictions on women in self-defence forces

27 July 2025 11:20

Japan’s Ministry of Defence has announced that the last remaining restrictions on women serving in the Japanese Self-Defence Forces (SDF) will be removed, marking a significant step toward greater gender diversity in the military.

Until now, women were barred from serving in two key divisions of the Ground Self-Defence Force: the units responsible for defence against nuclear, biological, and chemical threats, as well as chemical protection teams. These restrictions were originally in place reportedly to protect women’s reproductive health, Caliber.Az reports via Japanese media

However, with advancements in protective equipment and vehicles, the ministry has determined that it is now safe for female personnel to serve in these roles. The move will open up new opportunities for women within the SDF.

The process of integrating women into various military roles began in 1993, when the Defence Agency—the predecessor to the current Ministry of Defence—started allowing women to enter combat units. Since then, the SDF has made efforts to improve conditions for female personnel, including creating women-only living quarters and restrooms.

Women now serve in a growing range of positions, including on destroyer ships, fighter aircraft, and submarines.
