Japan: Typhoon Chan-hom leaves thousands of homes without power

11 August 2026 17:50

Nearly 6,000 homes in Japan’s Ibaraki Prefecture have been left without power after Typhoon Chan-hom crossed the coast north-east of Tokyo, Russian media reports.

Three people suffered minor injuries in the affected area, Japan’s national broadcaster reported.

The storm has brought strong winds, with gusts reaching 35 metres per second, damaging buildings and bringing down trees along its path.

Transport has also been disrupted across north-eastern Honshu, Japan’s main island. More than 100 domestic and international flights have been cancelled at Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports, as well as at Sendai and several smaller airports.

Some passenger train services have been suspended, while numerous intercity bus routes have also been cancelled. Passenger ferry services around Tokyo have been halted.

Chan-hom is expected to cross Honshu before moving towards the Sea of Japan.

Up to 180 mm of rain could fall in parts of north-eastern Japan by midday on Wednesday, exceeding the area’s typical monthly rainfall. Authorities have warned of possible flooding and landslides.
