Jordan moves to dismantle Muslim Brotherhood remnants, citing weapons, extremism

23 April 2025 17:22

Jordan’s Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya announced on April 23 that the country will immediately begin implementing legal measures against the dissolved Muslim Brotherhood, declaring the group illegal and banning all its activities nationwide.

In a televised press briefing, Al-Faraya read an official statement outlining the government’s firm stance, Caliber.Az reports via Arab media.

“The organisation is illegal, and any of its activities—regardless of form—are considered violations of the law and will be met with full legal accountability,” he said.

The Minister announced a sweeping prohibition on any group-related operations throughout the country. He stressed that this includes the closure of all offices or facilities affiliated with the group, even those shared with other entities. “Such premises will be shut down immediately, and their use will be deemed a breach of the law,” he stated.

The government also ordered the swift completion of the dissolution committee’s work, which is tasked with confiscating the Muslim Brotherhood’s movable and immovable assets in accordance with prior judicial rulings. Al-Faraya reiterated that membership in the group, or the promotion of its ideology in any capacity, is strictly forbidden.

Additionally, political actors, civil society organisations, media outlets, and individuals—including social media users—were warned against engaging with, representing, or publishing on behalf of the dissolved group or any of its affiliates. “All such acts constitute clear legal violations and will be subject to prosecution,” Al-Faraya emphasised.

The minister affirmed that the state will pursue legal action against any individuals or institutions found to be involved in criminal activities related to the group. These actions will be based on ongoing court investigations into relevant cases.

Highlighting the rationale behind the government’s crackdown, Al-Faraya cited the state’s responsibility to safeguard societal safety and public order. He stressed that while Jordan supports political freedoms and allows the formation of parties and civil associations, such freedoms must be exercised within the boundaries of the law.

He accused members of the dissolved group of operating covertly and engaging in dangerous activities, including weapons storage, explosives handling, and unauthorised recruitment and training operations inside and outside the country. “We have uncovered missiles, weapons, and explosives stored in residential areas,” he said, warning that these actions pose an immediate threat to national security and the lives of Jordanian citizens.

The Interior Minister concluded his statement by reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining stability and security amid regional and international challenges. He underscored the importance of responsible political participation within the legal framework and called for collective efforts to achieve the aspirations of the Jordanian people.
