Jordan summons Iranian diplomat, protests attacks on national territory
Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Iranian Embassy in Amman to deliver a formal protest over attacks targeting Jordanian territory and other Arab countries, the Jordan Times reports.
In a statement on 1 March, the ministry condemned the Iranian strikes as a “flagrant violation” of the sovereignty of Jordan and fellow Arab states, describing them as a “blatant breach” of international law and the United Nations Charter.
The ministry warned that the attacks constitute an “unacceptable escalation” threatening civilian safety as well as regional and international security and stability.
Spokesperson Foad Majali said the Iranian diplomat was told that Jordan demands the immediate cessation of attacks, full respect for its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and adherence to international law and principles of good neighbourliness.
Majali added that the ministry had made clear it will take all necessary measures to protect its citizens, safeguard national security, and defend Jordan’s sovereignty.
