Kallas: Trump’s NATO criticism might weaken alliance
U.S. President Donald Trump, by expressing dissatisfaction with NATO’s actions, may be deliberately seeking to undermine the military alliance, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas suggested.
Speaking to Estonian television channel, Kallas posed a rhetorical question whether this was a real complaint that could be addressed, or just a pretext to carry out a plan long in the making, Caliber.Az reports, citing ERR.
“In any case, this will not make America or any of its allies stronger,” she said.
The minister pointed out that the North Atlantic Alliance has not received any formal requests, meaning Trump “cannot claim” that he was not supported and use this as justification for his accusations.
“Trump has always complained about NATO. Previously, it was believed that everyone was contributing too little. Now, all members have increased defence spending, and Europe is genuinely trying to take on a greater share of the burden. But the complaints have become more frequent, without any real basis,” Kallas emphasised.
