Kars-Iğdır-Aralık-Dilucu railway construction to begin in April PHOTO

20 January 2025 17:32

Active construction work on the Kars-Iğdır-Aralık-Dilucu railway project will commence in April 2025, with the project expected to take approximately four years to complete.

This significant infrastructure development will span 224 km, connecting Kars to the border with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

Representatives from the Turkish construction company Kalyon, tasked with implementing the project, confirmed the timeline for the railway's construction.

The project was recently visited by an Azerbaijani delegation led by Fuad Muradov, Chairman of the State Committee for Diaspora Affairs, on January 20. The delegation also included the Governor of Iğdır Province, Turkish Members of Parliament, and the Azerbaijani Consul General in Kars, Zamin Aliyev, alongside military personnel participating in the Winter Exercises – 2025 in Kars.

The railway will largely be constructed parallel to the existing road that connects Kars with Iğdır, continuing towards Nakhchivan. This strategic project will involve approximately 3,500 Turkish specialists, who will carry out the construction works over the next few years.

Geological assessments along the route have already been completed, and a detailed report has been finalized. The project will also include the construction of several new stations, a track change point for trains, and a cargo terminal to support increased transportation needs.

The importance of the Kars-Iğdır-Aralık-Dilucu railway project was emphasized during the visit, with officials stressing its potential to significantly enhance regional development and improve transport links between Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Nakhchivan.

The length of the railway line from Turkish Kars to the border with Azerbaijan will be 224 kilometres. Within the framework of the transportation and logistics project it is planned to build five stations, and the speed of trains will reach 160 km/h.
