Kenyan ecologist slams Yerevan for violation of environmental conventions

01 February 2024 17:20

Head of TUBAE, an international organization operating in Kenya, Eliud Emeri has condemned Armenia for violation of environmental conventions.

“We, as an organization operating in Kenya, condemn the serious damage caused by the Armenian government to the environment and illegal activities in the mining sector,” he said, AZERTAC reports.

He said that Armenia's mining sector has caused a number of environmental problems in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. "The UN recognizes the right to a healthy and sustainable environment as a basic human right. While the world community is mobilizing to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals and intensifying its efforts to address environmental issues, Armenia's actions seriously violate the requirements of the Water Convention and the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (Espoo Convention) of the UN Economic Commission for Europe".

"As we prepare for COP29, scheduled to be held in November 2024 in the South Caucasus - Azerbaijan's capital Baku, we think that Armenia must fulfill its obligations under international environmental conventions.

As environmental advocates, we call for an audit of States Parties to identify specific resolutions against parties that fail to fulfill their obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. A clear legal framework must be established to eliminate these steps that are contrary to the solutions to these problems. We have witnessed actions by the Armenian government that grossly violate environmental protection and biodiversity," Emeri noted.
