Kremlin confirms close watch on Armenian oligarch’s legal case
Press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov has confirmed that Russia is keeping a close watch on the legal proceedings involving Armenian oligarch Samvel Karapetyan.
“Undoubtedly, we are following the situation. He is a Russian citizen, and while we do not wish to interfere in Armenia’s internal affairs, we are certainly watching everything related to the Russian citizen very closely,” Peskov said, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Addressing potential support for Karapetyan, Peskov added, “If necessary, Russia stands ready to provide any assistance required to Samvel Karapetyan.”
News of the philanthropist’s arrest emerged on June 18. On the same day, he was formally charged with inciting the seizure of power in Armenia. Following the announcement, supporters quickly gathered in the streets to protest the detention. Armenian politician Arman Abovyan condemned the arrest, calling it an attempt to weaken the influence of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
