Latvia weighs support for airBaltic over fuel cost pressure
Latvia’s national airline airBaltic has requested financial assistance from the government as it faces a sharp increase in fuel costs linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, according to LSM.
The airline has approached the Ministry of Transport seeking a short-term loan to manage the impact of rising fuel prices. While the exact amount has not been disclosed, preliminary estimates indicate the request could range between €100 million and €150 million.
Transport Minister Atis Švinka highlighted the importance of maintaining the airline’s operations for the country, adding that the matter will be considered at an upcoming government meeting.
Despite the financial pressure, airBaltic continues to operate its flight schedule. However, like many other carriers, it has temporarily suspended flights to Tel Aviv and Dubai due to security concerns.
The surge in aviation fuel costs has been particularly pronounced in the Middle East, further straining airline operations.
