Le Figaro: Macron to dissolve National Assembly under one condition

14 October 2025 20:59

French President Emmanuel Macron is prepared to dissolve the National Assembly and call early parliamentary elections if Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s government receives a vote of no confidence, Le Figaro reports.

This was announced by the French government’s spokeswoman, Maud Bregeon, who noted that the president would take such measures to ensure the stability of the executive branch.

France's political instability stems from President Emmanuel Macron's snap June 2024 elections, triggered by far-right gains in EU polls, yielding a fragmented National Assembly: centrists (~170 seats), left-wing New Popular Front (~182), and National Rally (RN) (~140). This has felled governments of Élisabeth Borne (2024), Michel Barnier, François Bayrou (September 2025), and briefly Sébastien Lecornu (October 2025).

Appointed September 9, Lecornu resigned on October 6 after 26 days, his cabinet slammed as too centrist. Reappointed on October 10, he unveiled a 35-member team on October 12, including Catherine Vautrin (defence) and Roland Lescure (economy).

Opposition erupted: France Unbowed (LFI) and RN filed no-confidence motions on October 13, needing 288 votes to pass. To secure Socialist abstentions, Lecornu suspended the 2023 pension reform (retirement age to 64) on October 14, amid 2026 budget urgency and EU debt alerts (114% GDP). Macron, rejecting resignation calls, warned that a censure would prompt dissolution and early elections, per sources, to safeguard executive stability as RN's Marine Le Pen pushes for his exit.
