Lecornu declines reappointment as French Prime Minister
Resigning French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has refused to be reappointed as head of government.
Despite stepping down, he will carry out President Emmanuel Macron’s request to negotiate with political parties, Caliber.Az reports, citing Le Figaro.
Lecornu personally informed Macron of his decision, but the president insisted that he complete consultations on forming the next government by October 8 and report the outcome, according to the publication. The former Prime Minister, Lecornu, agreed, emphasising that he will ‘not continue his mission,’ regardless of the outcome
The initiative to appoint Lecornu as negotiator reportedly came from Renaissance party secretary-general Gabriel Attal, Le Figaro noted.
As a reminder, Sébastien Lecornu resigned on October 6, 2025, citing political fatigue and challenges in managing coalition tensions.
His departure marks the third prime ministerial change in France within the past year, highlighting ongoing instability in Macron’s government.
