Lithuania procures 12 bridge-laying tanks from Germany
Lithuania has signed a contract with German company KNDS Germany for the supply of 12 Leguan bridge-laying tanks, with a total value of around €210 million.
The acquisition aims to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities and ensure readiness across NATO’s entire eastern flank, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence.
“If necessary, armoured vehicles will be able to quickly overcome natural and artificial obstacles, which is critically important in modern warfare. This acquisition strengthens the defence of both Lithuania and the entire eastern flank of NATO,” Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said.
The Leguan tanks are automated bridge-building systems mounted on Leopard 2 A8 armoured chassis. They provide a high level of armour protection, exceptional mobility, and the ability to construct bridges over obstacles impassable for military vehicles up to 25 meters wide in under six minutes.
The Leguan system features advanced automation and a modern video surveillance system, enabling round-the-clock operation with a minimal crew of two, or even a single driver if necessary. Installed on various tracked and wheeled platforms, the system is already in use by the armed forces of 22 countries, demonstrating its reliability and operational effectiveness.
