Lithuania reaffirms trust in NATO after Trump exit talk
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has reaffirmed his country’s full confidence in NATO, responding to remarks by US President Donald Trump about a possible US withdrawal from the Alliance.
According to Delfi, Nausėda stressed that NATO remains the cornerstone of Lithuania’s security, highlighting the importance of Alliance unity, collective defence, and the commitments of all member states.
“We fully trust NATO — the cornerstone of Lithuania’s security — the unity of the Alliance, collective defence, and the commitments of all allies,” Nausėda said, adding that strengthening ties with Washington has long been and will remain a strategic priority for Lithuania.
He underscored that the US military presence in Lithuania is the strongest deterrent against potential threats from Russia and forms the foundation of the country’s security. Nausėda also noted that in a letter to Trump, he reaffirmed Lithuania’s readiness to continue contributing to NATO’s collective security and to further develop positive bilateral relations with the United States.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė echoed confidence in the Alliance’s unity but said Trump’s comments should serve as a “wake-up call” for other NATO members to increase defence spending.
