Lithuania signals potential support for US operations against Iran
Lithuania could offer support to the United States in military operations against Iran, including the use of its territory, the country’s Chief of General Staff, Raimundas Vaitkūnas told LRT.
Vaitkūnas described recent U.S. and Israeli actions targeting Iran as a timely move aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear programme. He argued that suppressing this threat was necessary to enhance global security.
According to Vaitkūnas, Lithuania’s support could extend beyond military involvement to diplomatic, economic, or informational assistance, depending on U.S. needs. He specifically mentioned the possibility of providing Lithuanian territory for bomber and fighter jet operations, noting that some other countries had refused similar requests. However, he emphasised that any military participation would require formal approval from the Lithuanian government and national leadership.
Vaitkūnas also acknowledged the risk that escalating tensions in the Middle East might divert Western attention from supporting Ukraine. Nevertheless, he stressed that assistance to Kyiv, including the provision of air defense systems, should continue.
