Lithuania may join mine clearance operations in Strait of Hormuz
Lithuania’s Armed Forces may deploy military officers and mine clearance units to participate in international operations in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a statement from the country’s Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces reported by LRT.
As noted, on Monday, May 11, Lithuania’s State Defence Council announced the potential participation of the country in international missions aimed at restoring maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The final decision must be approved by the Seimas.
According to preliminary information, Lithuania could send up to 40 specialists, including both military personnel and civilian staff from the national defence system.
At present, the Lithuanian Armed Forces are assessing possible options for involvement.
“The final support package is still being coordinated with allies; however, Lithuania’s contribution may range from sending staff officers to international structures to using the capabilities of the Navy’s mine clearance units in maritime security operations,” the Ministry of Defence stated.
