Lukashenko signals possible CSTO collective defence amid global tensions
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has suggested that member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) could potentially act collectively to defend their territories if necessary.
Speaking during a meeting with CSTO Secretary-General Taalatbek Masadykov, Lukashenko cited the ongoing security and defence cooperation between Belarus and Russia as an example of how member states could coordinate in a crisis, Caliber.Az reports per Belarusian media.
He indicated that the CSTO might one day mobilise all armed forces and available weaponry to protect its member states’ territories.
Lukashenko also highlighted the global security situation, pointing to recent events in Iran as a demonstration of the vulnerability of the United States.
He noted that while the US has historically considered China its primary strategic rival, the situation in Iran shows that Washington faces challenges in confronting other countries as well. According to Lukashenko, this vulnerability underscores the need for the CSTO to assess global developments carefully and draw appropriate strategic conclusions.
