Luxembourg strengthens Ukraine's defence with investment in drone
Luxembourg, a small yet wealthy European nation, has significantly deepened its commitment to supporting Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
It has made a remarkable commitment to strengthen Ukraine's defence, dedicating 80 million euros to the production of weapons for Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
This move highlights Luxembourg's dedication to upholding Ukraine's sovereignty and resilience in the face of ongoing geopolitical instability.
Rather than being a symbolic act, Luxembourg's investment reflects a more profound strategic alignment with European security objectives, recognizing the urgent need to address key challenges in Ukraine's defense, especially the shortage of ammunition and advanced military technologies.
The allocated funds are set to support the production of Ukrainian drones, surveillance systems, and electronic warfare tools by 2025. These technologies are essential for modern warfare, offering not only tactical advantages but also ensuring Ukraine’s armed forces can adapt to evolving threats.
This initiative marks a pivotal moment for Luxembourg, signaling a shift from its traditional defense spending approach and demonstrating its flexibility and determination to support Ukraine through localized production.
Since the conflict began in February 2022, Luxembourg has provided over 200 million euros in aid to Ukraine, covering military, humanitarian, and economic support.
The upcoming funding, scheduled for 2025, builds upon this foundation, underscoring Luxembourg’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s cause.
This announcement was highlighted by Maria Mezentseva, Deputy Chair of Ukraine’s EU Integration Committee, who noted the unprecedented nature of Luxembourg’s direct involvement in bolstering Ukraine’s defense infrastructure.
Luxembourg’s Defence Minister, François Bausch, reinforced this viewpoint by emphasizing the country’s proactive stance in acquiring and delivering military aid that directly addresses Ukraine’s urgent needs.
Luxembourg’s initial contributions to Ukraine involved depleting its own military stockpiles. Once these resources were exhausted, the country shifted to sourcing additional equipment from external suppliers, ensuring a continuous flow of aid.
In a significant agreement signed in July 2024, Luxembourg and Ukraine established a 10-year security cooperation framework. This agreement, which ensures ongoing military support contingent on parliamentary approval, highlights Luxembourg’s long-term dedication to Ukraine’s defense.
It reflects a broader movement among European nations acknowledging the importance of consistent support for Ukraine as a fundamental element of regional stability.
