Macron: France backs Israel’s right to self-defence
French President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself following its recent strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, while urging all parties involved to avoid further escalation that could destabilise the Middle East.
Macron condemned Iran’s continued pursuit of its nuclear program and stressed that France had already taken “all appropriate diplomatic measures” in response. He warned against actions that could threaten regional stability and called for “maximum restraint,” Caliber.Az reports per the French leader’s post on X.
Following the Israeli strikes, Macron convened an emergency meeting of France’s National Defence and Security Council to discuss national and regional security. He said France would take all necessary steps to protect its citizens, as well as its diplomatic and military missions in the region. Measures would also be put in place to safeguard French territory and nationals at home.
“France stands ready to work with all its partners to push for de-escalation in the Near and Middle East,” Macron said, adding that he had spoken with leaders across the region and key Western allies, including the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, the King of Jordan, the leaders of the UAE and Qatar, as well as the German Chancellor, British Prime Minister, and US President.
“Peace and security for all in the region must remain our guiding principle,” Macron emphasised.
