Macron: No talks on Ukraine settlement without ceasefire
French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that it is impossible to discuss the terms of a settlement for the conflict in Ukraine as long as hostilities continue.
Speaking during a visit to Madagascar, Macron emphasised that any peace talks should only take place once military operations cease, Caliber.Az reports via French media.
"All other matters—such as territorial disputes, security issues—are part of negotiations over peace, but as long as Russia continues its strikes on Kyiv, it is unreasonable to expect Ukraine to accept any conditions," he said on French television.
Macron also dismissed media claims that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's rejection of proposed peace terms from Washington had angered US President Donald Trump. He clarified that he had spoken to the US president recently about the situation in Ukraine.
Furthermore, Macron argued that any US frustration should be directed towards Russia rather than Ukraine, and reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire without preconditions. Only after hostilities cease, he concluded, can discussions on a permanent resolution take place.
