Macron slams Trump for expecting support after unilateral action in Iran
French President Emmanuel Macron said the United States cannot claim a lack of allied support after opting to carry out the Iran war unilaterally, according to the Associated Press (AP).
“They can hardly complain afterward that they are not being supported in an operation they chose to undertake alone. This is not our operation,” Macron told reporters in Seoul, South Korea.
“What we want is for peace to be restored as quickly as possible,” he added.
Macron also addressed criticism of NATO by Trump, who has said he’s considering pulling the United States out of the alliance.
“When you have committed to an alliance, you live up to those commitments. You do not comment on them every morning. And the day there is a problem, you are there,” the French leader said.
Macron's comments came amid growing criticism from Trump, who has publicly blamed NATO allies for not backing the US stance on Iran, calling the alliance a “paper tiger” and saying he is strongly considering pulling the United States out of NATO because member states refused to join his efforts — particularly in reopening the Strait of Hormuz — and thus failed a “loyalty test” in his view.
He told The Telegraph that a US exit from NATO is now “beyond reconsideration,” signalling a deepening rift with European partners over the Middle East crisis.
Trump has also ramped up rhetoric questioning whether the alliance would come to US aid in future conflicts, underscoring frustration with what he perceives as one‑sided burden sharing.
