Major London rail hub closed after gas leak alert
A major transport hub in London, Farringdon station, was evacuated and closed on Thursday morning, April 30, after reports of a suspected gas leak, causing widespread disruption across the network.
According to Sky News, citing UK transport authorities, the incident prompted an immediate emergency response.
The British Transport Police said it received a call at 9:42 a.m. after several passengers reported feeling unwell. Police, fire crews, and medical teams were dispatched to the scene, and the station was subsequently shut down for safety checks.
The London Fire Brigade deployed multiple units and specialist personnel, working in coordination with other emergency services. Authorities have advised the public to avoid the surrounding area.
According to National Rail, the incident caused significant disruption to Thameslink services, with cancellations and delays reported. Train operations were suspended between St Pancras station and Blackfriars station, and stops at Farringdon and City Thameslink station were cancelled.
Disruptions also affected the Elizabeth line, where trains were not stopping at Farringdon and Tottenham Court Road stations. Some services were diverted via Paddington Station and Liverpool Street Station.
Passengers were advised to postpone travel if possible, with disruption expected to continue until around 17:00. Tickets are being accepted on alternative underground, rail, and bus routes.
