Majority in Japan favors allowing women to become empress

An overwhelming majority of people in Japan support allowing a woman to become the country's emperor, TASS reports, citing a nationwide poll conducted by the Kyodo News agency.

The survey showed that 81% of respondents backed the idea of female succession to the imperial throne, while 16.1% opposed it.

At the same time, nearly half of participants (49.6%) said they believe the government's recent legislative reform "will not gain understanding among local residents." An opposing view was expressed by 44.3% of respondents.

The poll was conducted on July 25–26, though the exact number of participants was not disclosed.
