Media: Pro-Assad supporters attack military barracks in Latakia, Syria
A group of supporters of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad attempted to attack a military barracks in the province of Latakia.
The confrontation erupted at the entrance to the military facility. Security personnel successfully repelled the attack and detained four assailants, Caliber.Az reports, citing Syria’s state news agency SANA.
The incident comes amid escalating clashes in western Syria. On 6 March, fighting broke out in the provinces of Latakia, Tartus, and Homs between security forces aligned with the new government and units loyal to Assad. The most intense battles were reported in the city of Jableh, a stronghold of the Alawite community—the religious minority to which the former president’s family belongs.
On 10 March, Syrian authorities declared the completion of their military operation in these regions, announcing the neutralisation of pro-Assad forces.
Casualties from the recent fighting have been severe. Since the onset of the conflict in western Syria, military losses have reached 250, while civilian casualties stand at 900, according to the latest reports.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah has denied any involvement in the recent events in Latakia, dismissing speculation of its participation in the clashes.
