Media: Protesters in Ceuta, Spain, throw eggs at MP’s car

Dozens of protesters pelted the car of Ceuta parliament member Julia Ferreras with stones and eggs during a protest against the arrival in the city of an association that had announced plans to distribute humanitarian aid to migrants, LaVanguardia reports.

The report said the protesters gathered at the port, waiting for vehicles that had arrived by ferry to leave the area.

When they saw Ferreras’ car, the protesters began throwing various objects at it and attempted to block its path, despite the MP having no connection to the association.

National Police officers were forced to intervene and escort the MP’s vehicle. At least two people were detained.

The incident took place amid growing social tensions in Ceuta over the large influx of migrants.

At the end of July, tens of thousands of undocumented migrants managed to reach Ceuta by swimming and wading around the breakwater separating the city from Morocco. Amid the crisis, Madrid decided to deploy the military to help maintain security in the city.

Up to 80,000 people may have entered the city, although the vast majority of them are believed to have already returned to Morocco, according to authorities.
