Media: Ukraine adapts highways for F-16 ops to avoid airbase strikes

31 August 2024 11:13

The Ukrainian military has converted sections of highways to serve as makeshift airbases for F-16 fighter jets, aiming to reduce the risk of attacks on traditional airbases.

This adaptation strategy was highlighted by LCI TV, which featured a video showcasing one of these modified roads, Caliber.Az reports.

According to LCI, former military pilot Xavier Titelman explained that on certain highway segments, central dividers have been removed and the asphalt has been repaired to accommodate aircraft. This modification is intended to minimize the risk of Ukrainian jets being targeted by Russian air defence systems.

The report also noted that Russian forces are aware of the locations of Ukrainian airbases and frequently conduct strikes against them. French General Michel Yakovleff, a guest expert on the program, commented that NATO has employed similar tactics in other countries.

However, he also acknowledged that operating fighter jets from highways involves greater risks compared to using dedicated airbases designed for such aircraft.
