Media: US hits over 60 Houthi targets in Yemen over 4 days plans troop surge in Middle East

21 March 2025 10:06

The United States has carried out strikes on more than 60 targets linked to the Houthi movement in Yemen since March 15 and plans to deploy reinforcements to the Middle East.

Thus, the strikes, conducted between 15 and 19 March, targeted Houthi engineers and officials involved in the group's drone programme, as well as drone operators, Caliber.Az reports, citing Al Jazeera.

The US aims to continue daily strikes against the Iran-aligned group until it halts attacks on commercial vessels and American warships in the Red Sea.

The administration of President Donald Trump intends to bolster US military presence in the Middle East, the official said.

Additional reinforcements, including air defence systems, are expected to be deployed to the region within the next two weeks.

In recent development, the Houthi group has claimed responsibility for a missile strike on Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport and an attack on a US aircraft carrier in the Red Sea on March 20. According to Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree, a hypersonic ballistic missile directly hit the airport. However, the Israeli military stated that the missile was intercepted outside Israeli airspace, with no reported casualties.

Saree also claimed that the group had launched rockets and drones at US warships, including the USS Harry Truman, though the United States has not commented on these claims.

The attacks follow increased US airstrikes in Yemen, with Houthi authorities reporting over 60 strikes since 15 March, causing more than 50 deaths and numerous injuries. The Houthis have been targeting Israeli-linked vessels since late 2023, citing solidarity with Gaza.

After a temporary halt during a ceasefire in January, they resumed operations following Israel’s restrictions on humanitarian aid to Gaza.
