Merz leaves door open to suspending Israel agreement over Gaza

29 July 2025 11:03

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on July 28 that his government is reconsidering its position on the European Union’s association agreement with Israel, hinting at a possible shift as he expressed concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

“We reserve the right to take such steps,” Merz stated when asked whether Germany might support suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which governs trade and broader cooperation between the EU and Israel, Caliber.Az reports, referring to foreign media.

Although Germany has previously opposed reviewing the agreement, several other EU member states have been advocating for its suspension or partial suspension.

With growing calls both domestically and internationally for Germany to take a firmer stance to address the humanitarian conditions in Gaza, Merz confirmed that Germany will take part in an airlift operation to deliver aid to the Palestinian enclave.

He noted that his government will wait for the outcome of a scheduled Middle East visit by Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on July 31 before determining any further action. However, Merz declined to comment when asked about a possible halt to German arms exports to Israel.

While Germany has historically been one of Israel’s staunchest allies, Merz is facing rising pressure, including from within his own governing coalition, especially from members of the centre-left Social Democratic Party, to consider imposing sanctions. His remarks on Monday marked the first time he publicly entertained the idea of sanctioning Israel in response to the situation in Gaza.

This comes amid mounting international criticism. Just last week, French President Emmanuel Macron announced his intention to recognise a Palestinian state, increasing the diplomatic pressure on Berlin.

Merz added that Germany will work alongside Jordan to deliver food and medical supplies into Gaza as part of the humanitarian airlift, with Defence Minister Boris Pistorius coordinating efforts in close consultation with France and the United Kingdom.

“We know that this can only be a very small help for the people in Gaza, but at least it is a contribution that we are happy to make,” Merz said.
