Merz to visit Japan for talks on defence cooperation, economic security
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is expected to visit Japan in October for talks with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi focused on defence industry cooperation and economic security, sources told Japan’s Yomiuri newspaper.
According to the report, the agenda could include joint development of military drones. Merz is also expected to be accompanied by representatives of German businesses, including defence companies.
The two sides are likely to discuss strengthening supply chains for critical minerals. Such efforts are aimed at reducing dependence on China for rare earth elements and other strategic resources.
Merz and Takaichi may also address issues related to artificial intelligence and the diversification of energy supplies amid ongoing tensions surrounding Iran.
In addition, the German chancellor is expected to attend a conference involving German businesses in Seoul from October 29 to 31 and may also visit Singapore during the trip.
