Moldova’s Sandu faces treason accusations over intelligence official transfer
The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, led by former Prime Minister Vladimir Filat, has accused President Maia Sandu of deliberate state treason.
The accusations stem from a decision to transfer former deputy head of the Security and Intelligence Service, Alexander Balan, to Belarus after he was sentenced to one and a half years in prison, Caliber.Az reports.
A statement shared on Filat’s Telegram channel said this raises questions unprecedented in the history of intelligence services.
“There are no documented examples of a state agreeing to transfer a former head of its own intelligence service, a holder of highly sensitive information, in exchange for the return of active officers. Undoubtedly, the return of captured citizens and officers is a moral and state obligation,” it reads.
According to the post, the manner in which this process was carried out creates enormous risks for national security.
“This act is comparable to deliberate state treason committed with the direct political involvement of Maia Sandu,” it noted.
