Moldova, Ukraine probe alleged plot by Russia to assassinate public figures
Moldovan police, working alongside Ukrainian law enforcement agencies, are conducting criminal investigation measures as part of a joint inquiry into an alleged plot to assassinate several public figures in Ukraine, authorities said on February 19.
In a statement, Moldova’s General Inspectorate of Police (IGP) said the actions began at 06:00 local time and are being carried out within a joint investigation team comprising Moldovan and Ukrainian officials. The alleged criminal activities were described as being “directed by the Russian special services," Caliber.Az reports per Moldovan media.
According to the IGP, the operation involves officers from the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and investigators from the National Investigation Inspectorate, working together with prosecutors from the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS). Members of Moldova’s special police unit, the “Fulger” brigade, are also providing support.
Authorities said the investigation concerns preparations for the “physical liquidation” of several Ukrainian public figures but did not disclose further details about the suspected targets or any arrests.
The General Inspectorate of Police said it would provide additional information after procedural actions are completed.
