Moldovan authorities seek armed foreigners to protect country
MP from the Moldovan “Shor” party, Vadim Fotescu, has said that the country's authorities are preparing bills that allow foreign troops to enter the country with their weapons, and the opposition planned to exclude these issues from the parliament's agenda.
“We propose to exclude from the agenda projects that are completely contrary to the neutrality of Moldova and allow the introduction of an armed contingent of foreign specialists with their weapons into the country. A huge request to the authors to withdraw these projects,” RIA Novosti quotes Foteschu as saying.
The initiative of the government, in question, implies the introduction of amendments to the laws on the state border and the procedure for the use of physical force, special means, and firearms.
So, for example, they want to introduce a clause into the law on the state border that the borders of Moldova can be guarded by representatives of foreign and international special agencies. They will also be allowed to import, carry and use weapons on the territory of Moldova for security and protection.
The initiative was supported by only 29 MPs of the opposition, while the ruling majority opposed it.
The country's Defence Ministry explained that these changes are necessary for joint border patrols with the European Border Police and Coast Guard Service.
