Latvian PM calls Russia’s demands on Ukraine unacceptable
Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, following a videoconference of the “Coalition of the Willing,” called several of Russia’s demands on Ukraine unacceptable.
“Donetsk is out of the question. Donetsk is Ukraine. Also, a ‘special status’ for the Russian language is unacceptable, because we know very well the consequences of that,” Siliņa stated., according to Caliber.Az.
During the discussion among leaders of the “Coalition of the Determined,” the Latvian prime minister emphasized the importance of a meeting between the presidents of Ukraine and Russia being held in a trilateral format, with the U.S. president also present.
“Trump is trying to keep Putin at the negotiating table, but we must be ready with a sanctions package if the talks break down. It is still unclear whether there will be a ceasefire or a peace agreement, but all scenarios must be prepared,” the Latvian prime minister said.
“At the same time, it is important for us what kind of security guarantees the U.S. promises Ukraine — whether it is merely military support or a real military presence. Equally important are the U.S. security guarantees for Europe and how they will be provided to Ukraine,” Siliņa added.
