Moldovan opposition demands report on USAID funding of authorities

12 February 2025 11:04

The Moldovan opposition demands that President Maia Sandu and the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) provide a report on the financial resources granted to them by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The remarks were Vasilii Bolea, a member of the opposition political bloc "Victory," in a video message posted on his Telegram channel, per Caliber.Az.

"Today, we are facing a harsh reality that can no longer be ignored: the loss of our country’s sovereignty due to the infiltration of a foreign organization, which, under the guise of 'development aid,' systematically undermines Moldova's independence. We demand a detailed report on the funds allocated through USAID, the projects financed, and most importantly, the beneficiaries of these funds. The people must know who received money to manipulate public opinion and support a government controlled by foreign entities," Bolea said.

He expressed outrage that the agency has "unjustifiably taken on the role of an arbiter in Moldovan democracy, funding non-governmental and media organizations that influence political decisions and support the ruling PAS and the president."

The lawmaker believes that all Moldovan citizens must demand transparency from the authorities, as foreign-funded manipulations must be stopped.

Last week, Sandu stated that she regretted the decision of former U.S. President Donald Trump's administration to suspend USAID operations. The Moldovan president denied the opposition's claims that PAS had received money from the agency.
