Nationwide strike halts public transport, ports across Greece Workers protest labour reforms
Public transport and ports in Greece came to a standstill due to a nationwide strike organised by the country’s largest public- and private-sector trade unions, ADEDY and GSEE, Reuters reports.
Workers are protesting a government bill that proposes extending working hours and changing hiring rules in the private sector.
"Instead of boosting workers' incomes and reinforcing public services, the government chooses to legislate work for multi-employers and gruelling working hours,” ADEDY and GSEE said in a statement.
As part of the strike, ships remained docked at ports, and rail services were suspended. Doctors from public hospitals, journalists from state media, and other categories of workers also joined the action.
At noon local time, protesters are expected to march to the parliament building in Athens, where debates and a vote on the controversial bill are scheduled to take place this week.
