NATO substantially strengthens military presence around Arctic
The US navy and British Royal navy have stepped up their presence in the Arctic Sea by deploying aircraft carriers meant as a warning message to Russia.
According to the 19fortyfive website, NATO is worried about Russia's recent activities in this region, considered a low-tension zone, by expanding its already extensive Arctic military presence.
The Chief of the US Navy, Admiral Michael M. Gilday was cited as having stated that US destroyers have continued "operating with allies and partners in the high north to put pressure on Russia" throughout the war in Ukraine, to make sure that "they know that we’re there with capable platforms".
The British Royal Navy followed this example and sent the HMS Prince of Wales into the Arctic for seven weeks this spring, the first Arctic deployment for the UK’s new Queen Elizabeth-class carriers.
As the High North News recalls, Russia has systematically expanded and strengthened its Arctic military in the past decade through a combination of bases, airfields, and large-scale radar installations, as well as defensive and offensive weapons systems along more than 6,000 km of Arctic coastline.
