New EU officials arrive in Ukraine to demonstrate unwavering support
New EU officials Kaja Kallas and Antonio Costa have left for Ukraine on their first day in office.
"European Council President António Costa, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, are on a visit to Kyiv," an EU source told media, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
The diplomat said that the visit is intended to demonstrate unwavering support for Ukraine. The details of the visit are not being disclosed for security reasons, except for the fact that Costa will hold a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell arrived in Kyiv following Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election. He noted that his fifth trip to Kyiv would be his final one as head of the EU's diplomatic service.
On November 27, the European Parliament approved the new composition of the European Commission, with former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas appointed as the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy.
According to the voting results, the new Commission was supported by 370 out of 688 MEPs. A total of 282 parliamentarians opposed the decision, while 36 abstained. The new European Commission will be led by Ursula von der Leyen. The activity of the new Commission officially began on December 1.
