New left-wing alliance poised to emerge in European Parliament

A new left-wing faction could form in the European Parliament within the next year, according to Czech MEP Ondrej Dostal.

In an interview with foreign media, Dostal revealed that a coordination meeting with German and Slovak representatives is scheduled for September 11, Caliber.Az reports.

This new coalition includes the Czech group Stačilo! (Enough!), the German Union for Reason and Justice led by Sarah Wagenknecht and the Slovak Smer-SD. The alliance aims to pivot from progressive left ideologies towards more traditional left-wing values such as workers' rights, peace, and economic stability.

"We anticipate forming this faction possibly within a year, depending on collaboration with other countries," Dostal stated. The coalition currently includes 13 MEPs but needs 25 from seven EU member states to officially establish the caucus. Dostal expressed confidence in achieving this target and hinted at potential partners from southern Europe.

The emerging faction is known for its critical stance towards the current EU leadership and advocates for a diplomatic resolution to the Ukrainian conflict, opposing continued military aid to Kyiv.

These parties are sceptical of climate policy, particularly the EU’s Green Deal, seeing it as a threat to jobs and industries dependent on traditional energy sectors.
