New York Mayor addresses Iranian community amid US-Israel strikes
New York Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani issued a statement regarding the military strikes on Iran carried out by the United States and Israel.
He described the events as a “catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression.”
“Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Opening a new theater of was,” he wrote.
Mamdani emphasised that, in his view, Americans “do not want this,” nor a new war or regime change. “They do not want another war in pursuit of regime change. They want relief from the affordability crisis. They want peace,” he said.
The mayor also stated that he is focused on ensuring the safety of all New Yorkers. He said he is in contact with the police commissioner and emergency services, and that authorities are increasing coordination between agencies and patrolling sensitive locations “out of an abundance of caution.”
Addressing New York’s Iranian community directly, Mamdani said: “you are part of the fabric of this city — you are our neighbors, small business owners, students, artists, workers, and community leaders. You will be safe here..”
