New York traffic accident kills 11-year-old Uzbek girl
An 11-year-old citizen of Uzbekistan, Amira Aminova, was killed in a road traffic accident in New York. The General Consulate of Uzbekistan in New York reported the incident.
The diplomatic mission said it received the news of the tragedy with deep sorrow and expressed its condolences to the girl’s mother and relatives.
According to CBS News, surveillance cameras recorded that Amira was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing and had the right of way. At that moment, a turning school bus struck the child. She was urgently taken to a local hospital, but doctors were unable to save her.
Police reported that the driver initially did not stop but was later located and questioned. According to preliminary information, the 62-year-old man stated that he did not notice the collision. He has been charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian and careless driving; however, no charge for leaving the scene of an accident has been brought. It was also noted that the driver had a valid licence and no prior criminal record.
The tragedy reportedly occurred just a few steps from the girl’s home. Neighbours brought soft toys, candles and Amira’s favourite sweets — white chocolate — to the site of the accident in her memory.
“A beautiful little girl, always smiling, happy, you know. You never saw her being rude,” said Amella Cekic, who was closely acquainted with the family.
The General Consulate remains in constant contact with the victim’s mother and is cooperating with New York local authorities. It is noted that all legal and organisational matters are under the supervision of the diplomatic mission. If necessary, relatives and fellow nationals may contact the General Consulate of Uzbekistan in New York for assistance.
