North Korea may discuss Trump–Kim summit during Xi Jinping visit
South Korea’s Unification Minister Chung Dong-young has stated that a potential summit between Pyongyang and Washington could be discussed if Chinese President Xi Jinping visits North Korea.
Xi is reportedly planning a state visit to North Korea later this month or early next month, Caliber.Az reports, citing South Korean media.
The reports pointed to recent visits by members of Xi’s security detail and ceremonial staff to Pyongyang as possible indicators of preparations.
If that happens, a Kim Jong Un-Donald Trump summit “will surely be discussed,” Chung told reporters outside the government complex in Seoul, while noting that Beijing has not officially confirmed the visit.
He said “gigantic tectonic plates are in motion,” referring to recent diplomatic engagement involving the United States, China and Russia.
“Now is time for us to deeply contemplate strategic options for stability, peace and mutual prosperity amidst these tectonic changes in the geopolitical landscape of Northeast Asia surround the Korean Peninsula,” he added.
South Korea has been seeking to improve strained inter-Korean relations and is also said to have pushed for North Korea-related issues to be included in recent high-level discussions between US and Chinese leaders.
