North Korea tests new missile, rocket, artillery systems

North Korea has conducted a series of major weapons tests, including a tactical ballistic missile warhead, an upgraded multiple-launch rocket system and a long-range self-propelled artillery piece, as leader Kim Jong Un called for a more aggressive military posture amid continuing tensions with South Korea.

Among the weapons tested was an upgraded 240-millimetre multiple-launch rocket system (MLRS), which analysts have compared to the U.S.-made HIMARS system, state-run KCNA reports.

KCNA said the modernised launcher, equipped with 24 launch tubes, features automated firing preparation and can fire guided rockets.

"During the tests, the combat performance of the upgraded 240-millimetre multiple launch rocket system with 24 launch tubes was analysed and evaluated," KCNA said.

The report said the range of the 240-mm precision-guided rockets had been increased to about 90 kilometres.

North Korea also tested the warhead of the Hwasong-11Ra tactical ballistic missile, which can be launched from the MLRS.

KCNA said the new warhead is intended to strike "key enemy targets" such as airfields and energy facilities.

In addition, North Korea tested a new 155-mm self-propelled howitzer fitted with an extended-range projectile.

"During the tests, an analysis and evaluation were conducted […]of the accuracy of the extended-range projectile for the 155-millimetre self-propelled howitzer," KCNA said.

According to the report, the new ammunition can reach targets up to 65 kilometres away.

The tracked self-propelled artillery system, known in the West as the M2018, mounts a 155-mm gun in a rotating turret.
