NYT: New financial mechanism to speed up US arms deliveries to Ukraine
One way to accelerate the delivery of U.S. weapons to Ukraine could be the creation of special accounts in Europe to pay for American arms, which would then be transferred to Kyiv, according to The New York Times (NYT).
“The senior American defense official said one approach would be for European countries to establish special accounts that would be managed by General Grynkewich, the top NATO and American military commander in Europe. Funds would be deposited in the accounts to pay for the American weapons sold to the allies, and then transferred to the U.S. Treasury,” the publication said.
The U.S. believes this will help ease the “onerous defense export controls ” that have previously delayed the transfer of American weapons from allies to Ukraine.
At the same time, European payments for U.S. weapons destined for Ukraine would be transferred from these accounts to the U.S. Treasury.
