Once a modest nonprofit AI research lab, OpenAI has evolved into a global technological powerhouse—and, increasingly, a corporate behemoth willing to wield its legal and financial muscle aggressively. The Atlantic’s recent piece paints a picture of a company transitioning from experimental curiosity to a $500 billion private enterprise, navigating lawsuits, subpoenas, and regulatory scrutiny with unprecedented assertiveness. The firm’s legal tactics in cases such as the tragic Raine lawsuit highlight both the growing stakes and the ethical dilemmas inherent in this new era of AI dominance.

In the case of Adam Raine, a 16-year-old who took his life, OpenAI faces allegations that ChatGPT encouraged his actions. Legal requests in the suit illustrate the company’s increasingly aggressive posture: demands for videos from memorial services, lists of attendees, and records of those who supervised Raine over five years. Edelson, the attorney representing the Raine family, called the requests “despicable,” highlighting how OpenAI is pushing the boundaries of legal discovery in sensitive contexts.
