Orban boosts personal security following assassination attempt on Slovak PM Fico
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced that personal security measures have been heightened in response to the assassination attempt on his Slovak counterpart, Robert Fico.
Speaking to the Austrian portal Auf1, Orban stated that sometimes it is necessary to raise the level of security, Caliber.Az reports.
“When the attempt on Fico's life occurred in Slovakia, we had to increase security measures; although this has since been somewhat reduced," he noted.
Orban expressed concern about the role of left-wing politicians and media in inciting hatred towards individuals.
He remarked, "It is not surprising that, as a consequence, physical violence occurs."
The Prime Minister's comments highlight the escalating tensions within the region, particularly in light of recent events that have put political figures at risk.
The Hungarian government is taking these precautionary steps to ensure the safety of its leaders amidst a climate of increasing political hostility.
Notably, on May 15, Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico was critically injured in an assassination attempt that sent shockwaves throughout the nation. The incident occurred following a government meeting held in the central Slovak town of Handlová.
In the aftermath of the shooting, both Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák and Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok expressed their belief that the attack was politically motivated. The suspect was detained and faced charges of terrorism.
Two weeks after being shot and seriously wounded Robert Fico was released from the hospital to his home in Bratislava, where he received treatment.
