Orbán: Putin-Trump meeting makes world safer

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán praised the recent meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, saying it has made the world a safer place.

“For years, we witnessed the two largest nuclear powers erode the foundations of their cooperation and exchange hostile messages. That era has now ended. Today, the world is safer than it was yesterday. May every weekend be at least as good!” Orbán wrote, according to Russian media.

Speaking after the talks, Putin acknowledged that relations between Russia and the United States in recent years had been strained, reaching their lowest point since the Cold War—a situation he said was detrimental to both countries and the world. “It was clear that sooner or later the situation needed to be corrected, moving from confrontation to dialogue,” he stated.

Trump noted that a wide range of issues were discussed during the meeting, including several that were “really significant.”

Ahead of the summit with the US, Putin mentioned that the two sides could reach agreements on strategic offensive weapons in future stages of dialogue. Moscow had suspended its participation in the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) with Washington in 2023.

The treaty, originally signed in 2010 by US President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for ten years (effective from 2011), was later extended for five years by Putin and then-US President Joe Biden. It is set to expire in February 2026.

In a post-meeting interview, Trump warned that if Russia or the US—possessing the world’s largest nuclear arsenals—decide to use them, it “could be the end of the world.”
