Over 400,000 Syrians return home following fall of former regime Border Crossings Experience Surge

02 June 2025 16:59

Since the fall of Syria’s former regime, more than 400,000 Syrian citizens have returned home from neighbouring countries, according to Mazen Alloush, Director of Relations at the General Authority for Land and Sea Border Crossings.

These returnees include refugees who have chosen to settle permanently, as well as tens of thousands of Syrian expatriates visiting or planning a final return, Caliber.Az reports per Syrian media.

Alloush stated in a recent Facebook post that the Authority is fully committed to providing the necessary facilities and services to ensure a safe and dignified return for all Syrians. He described this as a national duty to support citizens wherever they may be.

The border crossings are currently witnessing heightened activity, with increasing numbers of Syrians arriving from abroad alongside growing numbers of Arab and foreign visitors. To cope with this demand, the Authority has strengthened its teams and improved readiness to ensure smooth and efficient processing, minimising delays and offering high-quality services to travellers.

In a related update, Edem Wosuruno, Director of Operations and Protection at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), reported that more than one million internally displaced Syrians have returned to their homes. Additionally, over half a million refugees have returned from neighbouring countries.

Despite these encouraging figures, Wosuruno emphasised that 16.5 million people in Syria still require humanitarian aid and protection, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by the population.

The surge in returnees highlights a significant shift in the region, as many Syrians seek to rebuild their lives in their homeland following years of conflict and displacement.
