Peskov: US actions undermine stability in South Caucasus
The United States is playing a destabilizing role in the South Caucasus and is attempting to draw new states into its orbit, said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, on January 14.
It was previously announced that Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken plan to sign a strategic partnership document in Washington, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
In June last year, following an Armenian-American strategic dialogue meeting, the two countries' governments issued a joint statement expressing their intention to elevate their bilateral strategic dialogue to the level of a strategic partnership.
"The United States has never played a particularly stabilizing role in the South Caucasus; one could even say quite the opposite," Peskov remarked, commenting on the news.
He further added that, in this context, the US is attempting to "draw more and more countries into its orbit."
On August 8, Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated during an interview with RIA Novosti that the United States aims to control the South Caucasus region's resource base and transit capabilities.
