Poland scrambles jets to secure airspace near Ukraine Amid Russian attacks

03 February 2026 09:27

Polish fighter jets were scrambled in response to Russian long-range aviation strikes on Ukraine, the Operational Command of Poland’s Armed Forces reported.

The decision was taken to ensure the security of Poland’s airspace, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Command's X post.

“Attention. Due to the activity of the Russian Federation’s long-range aviation conducting strikes on the territory of Ukraine, an operation to activate military aviation in Polish airspace has begun,” the official statement said. In line with standard procedures, the Operational Command deployed all necessary forces and assets to ensure air defence. In particular, fighter jets and an early warning aircraft were scrambled, while ground-based air defence systems and radar surveillance assets were placed on full alert.

DORSZ representatives stressed that these measures are preventive in nature and aimed at ensuring the security of Poland’s airspace, especially in areas adjacent to threatened territories.

“The Operational Command of the Armed Forces is monitoring the current situation, and forces and resources under its control remain ready for immediate response,” the press service added.

Meanwhile, authorities in Kyiv reported a nighttime missile strike on the city by Russian forces. According to local officials, two people were killed in the attack. Several districts of the city were hit, with damage reported to residential buildings, including high-rise blocks, as well as a kindergarten and infrastructure facilities. Fires broke out in several locations. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said emergency response teams had been dispatched to the affected areas.

In addition, the Russian army continued shelling in other regions of Ukraine. Among the hardest hit were Kharkiv and the Dnipropetrovsk region, where destruction and casualties were also reported.
