Pope Leo XIV makes fresh appeal to Moscow and Kyiv for peace

Pope Leo XIV called on Russia and Ukraine to halt hostilities and expressed his condolences to the families of those killed and to people affected by the conflict between the two countries, Vatican News reports.

“War only breeds more war and causes immense suffering. It is time to stop the spiral of violence and make room for diplomacy and dialogue, paving the way for peace,” the pontiff said in remarks following the traditional Sunday prayer.

The pope urged the parties to strictly comply with international humanitarian law and halt strikes that result in civilian casualties.

“I stand with the families of the victims, the wounded, and all those who are suffering as a result of the ongoing conflict,” he noted.

In addition to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Leo XIV called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan. The pontiff expressed deep concern over the situation around the city of el-Obeid and urged the authorities to ensure the establishment of humanitarian corridors for civilians.
